Advanced Training Program in Gestalt Therapy and Related Approaches

Training Workshops and Credit

Training Workshops:: The Boulder Psychotherapy Institute offers individual training workshops in Gestalt, Existential, Humanistic, Jungian, Psychodynamic, Bio-energetic, Imago and Creative Therapies. Concentration is in Gestalt Therapy. Workshops include theory, demonstration, experiential exercises and practice and are designed to benefit both experienced therapists and graduate student therapists-in-training. They may be taken individually or as part of the training program leading to an Advanced Certificate in Gestalt Therapy and Related Approaches.

The Advanced Program: Students in the advanced program complete three hundred hours of study in Gestalt therapy and related approaches. The advanced program offers practice and supervision as well as course work.

Eligibility for the Advanced Program: Mental health professionals (psychologists, social workers, licensed professional counselors, school psychologists, drug and alcohol counselors, marriage and family therapists, and pastoral counselors) and graduate students in psychology or related fields are eligible to join the program. Some exceptions may be made for mental health professionals without advanced degrees. Eligibility is determined through an interview with one of the Institute's co-directors.

Transfer Credit: Up to 60 hours of Gestalt training may be transferred or taken elsewhere in an approved program or university. Credit will be granted if the program seems comparable.

Faculty: Courses are taught by the Institute co-directors and distinguished guest faculty.

Disclaimer: The Boulder Psychotherapy Institute's individual workshops and advanced training program are open to graduate students and mental health professionals. Both are supplementary and ancillary to formal credentials. Our training program and workshops do not lead to licensure in any mental health field, but are instead designed for skills enhancement for graduate students and practicing professionals. We offer excellent supplementary education by providing experiential training conducted by well-known professionals with many years experience in the field.

Requirements for the Certificate

The Training Program leading to an Advanced Certificate in Gestalt Therapy and Related Approaches offers over 300 hours of workshops, trainings, supervision, practice, and personal Gestalt experience, culminating in a Final Project. Normally the program is broken down according to the areas listed below. Trainees work with Institute Directors to design a personalized program that makes every effort to address their individual situations and meet their professional needs.

1.      Basic and Advanced Gestalt Training200 or more hours, including 60 or more hours of basic Gestalt training in working with individuals. Advanced courses include Group Therapy, Gestalt and Imago Relationship Therapy, Gestalt Dream Training, Gestalt Therapy and the Child Within, Gestalt Practice Group, and other Gestalt workshops and trainings taken with the Institute or elsewhere.

2.      Gestalt Supervision: 12 or more hours of individual supervision or 24 or more hours of group supervision with an approved Gestalt therapist. Two hours of group supervision count as one hour of individual supervision in work toward the Certificate. To get credit for supervision, the trainee must be working with at least several clients doing a large component of Gestalt work. This may include work with individual, couple or group therapy clients in private practice, clients in an institutional setting, or practice (pro bono) or paying clients drawn from elsewhere.

3.      Personal Gestalt Work: 25 hours or more hours of personal experience working with an approved Gestalt therapist individually or 50 or more hours of group experiential work or some combination thereof. Two hours of group work count as one individual session in work toward the Certificate. The Institute believes that one of the best ways to learn Gestalt Therapy is to experience personal work. The personal experience component is similar to the Training Analysis in Psychoanalytic Institutes.  Some prior experience with personal Gestalt work may count toward this component.  Gestalt Process Groups offered by the Institute also fulfill this requirement. They are training rather than personal therapy and include process with discussion of methods.

4.      Additional Course Work: Trainees may take up to 40 hours of additional training in Gestalt Therapy and Related Approaches through the Institute. Related approaches include Existential, Humanistic, Jungian, Psychodynamic, Bio-energetic, Imago, Trauma and Creative Therapies.

5.      Final Project: The final project requires submission of a videotape of a Gestalt session made by the trainee with the client's, couple’s or group's permission. A paper ten pages or longer explaining the application of Gestalt principles and techniques is included with the tape. The paper discusses interventions made by the trainee, client issues, boundary disturbances, and transference and counter-transference issues.

The program leading to Advanced Certification may be taken over as many years as the trainee requires for completion. One to three years, taking courses monthly or over weekends, probably represent minimal time needed to achieve mastery of Gestalt Therapy and related approaches. For more information, call us at 303-494-0393 or e-mail us at bpi.training (at) boulderpsych.com.
